Leonurine

Leonurine is an alkaloid that has been isolated from Leonotis leonurus (Lion's tail), Leonotis nepetifolia, Leonotis artemisia, Leonurus cardiaca (Motherwort), as well as other plants of family Lamiaceae. It is a natural product with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective activity being investigated for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It suppresses inflammation and oxidative stress, decreasing a number of inflammatory factors, reducing cardiac Nox4 expression, ROS production, NF-KB activation, and plasma MMP-2 activity and increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD). It significantly increased the viability of cardiomyocytes injured by hypoxia. Leonurine hydrochloride can be used in cosmetics material.
