Dimethyl phthalate is used as a solvent and plasticizer in film coatings in pharmaceutical applications and is also widely used as an insect repellent.

Application
DMP can be used to plasticize cellulose acetate which can be further used in the production of laminated safety glass for flight helmets and goggles. It can be used as a plasticizer that forms complexes with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and lithium salts for the development of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) for solar cell (SC) s. It may also be used as a mixture of polymeric solvents which can be used in the preparation of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).
